Shotgun Armour Plate

Shotgun Plate

A shotgun is an extremely powerful weapon , and it is no accident it’s a preferred weapon of the career criminal. The 1oz slug will boast an energy level in excess of 3,000 Joules of energy. This level of energy is more than most standard military rifles. To stop this 1oz projectile requires 4mm of military tank grade steel.

If you have checked our slash / stab vest you may have noticed we state this vest is capable of stopping bird-shot fired from a shotgun at 5 metres distance. This is true, but there’s one vital fact that makes shotguns unlike any other weapon - distance. If someone was to discharge an handgun at point blank range the bullet is much the same threat as it would be from a greater distance. With a shotgun firing bird or buck-shot, distance is critical. At close distance several small projectiles will display similar physical properties as one large projectile, this means at distances of sub 18 inches all discharges from a shotgun will emulate one fearsome projectile capable of punching through high specification body armour.

Close range shotgun bodily strikes are generally fatal, irrespective of what ammunition is loaded. The 1oz slug strike at considerable distance is also deemed exceptionally dangerous threat with equally life endangering capability. This is the reason only one cartridge (the 1oz) slug appears in the UK Police shotgun standard.

Sawn Off Shotguns

Sawing off part of shotgun barrel will reduce the accuracy and energy of the gun. Why would anyone want to reduce the capability of the weapon? There are two reasons:

  1. Concealabilty - A criminal could not hide a weapon several feet long under a coat.
  2. It’s easy to hit any target when not using the 1oz slug.  Any multi-shot cartridge will spread at a wider angle from a short barrel - this practically ensures a target strike in the general direction of the gun

SG1 - Shotgun Table

The SG1 Plate is certified to be used in conjunction with our HG2 body armour. It is very light at 1.2 Kilos and uses a Glass Fibre base instead of ceramic. We have successfully tested the plate with our IIIA vests on a MOD approved test range (not a PSDB range). The figures relate to BODYARMOUR UK vests and plates and should not be taken as proof of conformity with other manufacturers products.
